A healthcare startup built smart pill bottles that alert users when a dose is missed, aiming to reduce medication errors at home. Their key users weren’t patients—but their caregivers. They engaged through phone and a dashboard, reaching them via targeted digital ads. They relied on an engineering team and a secure cloud system, with key partnerships through a pharmacy chain and home health networks. Main costs were manufacturing and marketing, and revenue came from caregiver subscriptions.

Steps

  1. Value Proposition: What is the core value you offer? What problem are you solving, or what need are you meeting—and why does it matter?

Ask: What change or benefit do we create for the people we serve?

  2. Customer/User Segments: Who are you serving or helping? These could be customers, users, donors, beneficiaries, or partners.

Ask: Who benefits most from what we offer?

  3. Customer/User Relationships: How do you connect with each group? Consider communication, engagement, and support.

Ask: Do we engage face-to-face, digitally, through events, or with a team?

  4. Channels: How do you connect with each group? Consider communication, engagement, and support.

Ask: How do we reach our customers?

  5. Key Activities: What are the most important things you must do to deliver your value?

Ask: What work or services make our mission possible?

  6. Key Resources: What people, tools, systems, or funding do you need to operate?

Ask: What assets do we rely on to do the work?

  7. Key Partners: Who helps you get things done—funders, collaborators, suppliers, networks?

Ask: Who do we depend on that’s outside our team?

  8. Cost Structure: What are the most important costs—staff, tools, operations, outreach?

Ask: What do we need to spend to keep delivering our value?

  9. Revenue Streams: How do you sustain your work—through sales, grants, donations, memberships, or fees?

Ask: How does value turn into income or support?
