Step-by-Step

Plan

Break big goals into clear steps—working backward.

A city transportation department aimed to launch a bike-to-school program in all middle schools by next fall. Working backwards, they mapped key steps: deliver bikes and gear, map routes, train teachers, and collect parent permissions. Checkpoints were set: draft routes by May, pilot in two schools by June. They anticipated challenges like low student interest or safety concerns and planned solutions, such as kickoff events and early coordination with traffic police. PE teachers, local cyclists, and neighborhood groups joined as key allies.

Steps

  1. Start by writing your final goal clearly. This is where you want to end up.

  2. Work backwards.

Ask: What has to happen right before this?

Keep repeating the question, moving step by step toward today.

  3. For each big step, list the smaller actions that will make it happen.

  4. Some things might need to happen at the same time. That’s okay, just make sure each step matters.

  5. Add simple checkpoints with dates and outcomes to track your progress and stay motivated.

  6. Think about what could slow you down, and list some ways to handle those bumps.

  7. Find your helpers.

Ask: Who can support or unlock progress?

List people or groups to get involved.

  8. You’ve got the path! Begin today with the first doable action.
