Staff Your Project

Plan

Build the right team with key skills and roles.

A corporate HR team at a tech company launched a health initiative to reduce eye strain from screen overuse. Top priority was clear messaging that didn’t feel preachy. Their current team had comms skills but lacked health expertise, so they brought in an occupational health advisor and a UX designer to create interactive break reminders. They partnered with their wellness vendor to provide vision screenings and blue light filters. Planning ahead, they scheduled time to onboard new roles and expand the program globally.

Steps

  1. Review your Capabilities Quicksheet and identify the must-have skills for successful implementation (e.g., operations, tech, and funding).

  2. Reorder them by priority to spotlight your most urgent needs.

  3. Evaluate if your current members cover the needed skill sets.

    Ask:

    Who should stay on?

    Who can roll off?

    What new roles are missing?

  4. Identify new roles. Consider if you need specialists like:

    • A project manager to drive execution.

    • Subject-matter experts (e.g., healthcare, finance, manufacturing).

    • Monitoring & evaluation experts to track impact.

    • Communication or business development.

  5. Identify outside organizations, funders, or stakeholders you need to involve.

    Ask:

Who must we partner with to bring this idea to life?

  6. Look ahead. Think not just about launch, but about who you’ll need at scale—such as support, product leads, or policy advocates.

  7. Schedule time for hiring, partner engagement, and onboarding in your Success Roadmap.
